Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Strawberries & Cornflowers
A country girl in a red polka-dot headscarf and a blue sarafan sits at the edge of a sunny yellow yard, holding a wooden tub of grain. Her four golden hens are painted with ripe strawberries and green leaves, and they peck among more strawberries and blue cornflowers. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The round wooden ball underneath sways, the strings pull, and the hens dip their beaks in turn.
This is the brightest of our pecking hens, a summer meadow in red, yellow and blue. Each one is carved from soft limewood and painted entirely by hand, in the long tradition of Bogorodskoye moving toys from near Moscow.
It’s a joyful gift for children, and a cheerful splash of Russian folk art for a kitchen shelf or a nursery.
