Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Red & Gold Khokhloma
A rosy-cheeked girl in a sunflower-yellow sarafan with polka dots stands at the edge of a glowing red-and-gold yard, holding a tub of grain. Four red hens with gilded tails lean in to feed, painted with strawberries and curling leaves. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden ball sways underneath, the strings pull, and the hens peck at the grain in turn.
This is the most festive of our pecking hens, finished in true Khokhloma colours: deep red, black and shimmering gold, with strawberries and rowan berries scattered across the board. Khokhloma painting has decorated Russian tableware for over 300 years. Here it’s brushed by hand onto carved limewood.
The toy itself comes from the Bogorodskoye tradition of moving wooden toys near Moscow. It’s a wonderful gift, and especially lovely at Christmas with all that red and gold.
