Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Golden Apples
A smiling girl in a red-sleeved sarafan stands in the middle of her orchard yard, holding a basket of grain. Around her, four hens with bright red combs and tails bend towards their breakfast. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight swings below, the strings tug, and the hens peck at the grain one after another.
This one is the lightest and warmest of our pecking hens. The pale limewood is left showing through, and over it are painted golden apples, green leaves and clusters of red berries, with crisp white highlights, all by hand in the style of Russian Khokhloma folk painting.
Moving toys like this have come from the carving village of Bogorodskoye near Moscow for well over a century. It makes a charming gift for a child, and a sunny little piece of folk art for any shelf.
