Bagarodsky Toy - Pecking Hens, Blue Gzhel Style
A farm girl in a blue-and-white sarafan stands at the edge of her yard, holding a bowl of grain. Four hens gather round with their red combs bobbing, ready for breakfast. Hold the paddle by its handle and swing it gently in a circle. The wooden weight beneath sways, the strings pull, and the hens peck at the grain in turn.
This version is painted in the style of Gzhel, the famous cobalt-blue-on-white porcelain from the village of Gzhel near Moscow. Here the flowing brushwork is carried across carved limewood: roses on the hens’ backs and blue petals around the board, all painted by hand.
The pecking hens toy comes from the Bogorodskoye carving tradition, where it has been made for well over a century. It’s a delightful gift for a child, and for anyone who loves blue-and-white china, a little piece of Russian folk art that moves.
